Start of Grandstand…
The side step from the Barbarians number 10 was sublime
Within 15 seconds, JPR got hit with 2 tackles that would both be red card/citation/ban these days...
How the game has changed, two tackles around the neck by the kiwis , today that try wouldn’t happen
That wasn’t the best try ever that was just team work
Gareth Owen Edwards the best of the best Huge pass incredible speed.Total Welsh legend and in my opinion the greatest rugby player of all time.
No Gerald Davies. No mervyn Davies. No Barry John. Benny did the rest
2 high tackles on JPR.
Who is the All black doing the high tackles?
Simply a magic rugby moment in history
look at all the head high tackles
It's a shame cards is spoiling the beautiful game
The tackling. I'm crying laughing because those tackles around the head would be an instant red card these days. These chaps just carried on as if nothing happened.
I played rugby as an exchange student at Lycée Jean Charcot in St. Servan, France, in 1964/65 (Champion Junior de La Bretagne) and this kind of magic brings back the memories of schoolboy rugby, at which the French kids were astonishingly proficient by the age of 15 or 16. As you can see, rugby is perhaps the paramount field game requiring deep spacial awareness and split-second decision making, even more than soccer.
After forward pass
Goosepimples indeed...
I'm not a big RU fan but that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up
What a Score! Epic commentary
Goosebumps. Every time.
I remember watching this game and one still feels the thrill of seeing the way Phil Bennett takes that ball and goes pass those tackles and the magnificent support play, the Gareth Edwards pace…all so memorable.
I love this even though I cant unsee the forward pass.
I saw it, on a TV, in the Men's Club at UCG . A thing of beauty.
Yep.
My dad showed me this try when I was about 5 years old in 1980, best try ever, well was my dad's favourite try so will do for me.
In today's game there would have been 3 or 4 whistles in that bit of play. 😞
Never mind the players, although they were great. Who else misses Cliff Morgan on commentary?
Few things in sport compare to seeing Gareth Edwards going full tilt but I think JPR's try was better. Anhygoel.
im not a rugby fan but this is brilliant
Just watched it 4 times brilliant
Wow wow wow Anything anything in the old days is never the same today what a try that was unbelievable
Bennett sidestepped the camera man . How rugby has changed..
TMO would have disallowed it.
Still the greatest try ever.
Quite brilliant. And not a protein shake in sight. Or any of the other junk today's "professionals" are compelled to shove into their bodies...
After over 50 years this still remains as the greatest try.
I thought Bill McClaren was the commentator that day? Are there two versions?
I'd have loved to see him change codes. I have absolutely no doubt he'd have been immense in League. Sadly we'll never know.
RIP, JPR
Great try, apart from the 2 forward passes and knock ons. No TV match official back then to inject themselves into the game and stop play. And how about the head high tackles in those days. Today the tacklers would be binned for 4 games. But these guys are MEN, and the person tackled didn’t fake being hurt, they just got on with the game. Those were the days.
Aye. Braw. 😊
Truly brilliant. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
At least 5 red cards in just over a minute of play under today's rules. Those clothesline tackles man
Gareth Edwards is the closest thing to Superman right at the end !
RIP JPR Williams
I literally got tingles all over watching that!
RIP JPR. Much love from London!
Rip JPR. From an age where they just got on with it.
Rest in Peace JPR
RIP JPR Williams. Thank you for so many memories of rugby at its very best.
last pass looked forward....but a great try nonetheless......
